Thinking of Becoming a Driving Instructor? Part 5: Franchise or Independent — Which Suits You?

Part 5 of 6 — Thinking of Becoming a Driving Instructor?

Neither model is automatically right for everyone

One of the earliest business decisions a new instructor faces is whether to join a franchise or work independently. Both can lead to a successful career, but they suit different people and different circumstances.

What a franchise can offer

A franchise can provide useful support, including:

  • Brand recognition.
  • A supply of pupils.
  • Training resources.
  • Business guidance.
  • Vehicle options.

What to check in the contract

Before signing, examine the contract carefully and understand:

  • The franchise fee.
  • Contract length.
  • Notice periods.
  • Vehicle obligations.
  • Advertising arrangements.
  • Restrictions on working independently.
  • What happens when the agreement ends.

The independent route

An independent instructor may have greater control over pricing, branding and marketing, but must generate their own business and manage more of the administration themselves.

Neither model is automatically right for everyone — the better question is which one fits how you want to work, and how much of the business side you want to run yourself.

In the final article of this series, I will set out the route I would recommend to anyone starting from the beginning.
