SWOT another tool in your toolbox

In my last article I wrote about the GROW model as a self-evaluation technique.

This article is about using a SWOT analysis.

SWOT (analysis or matrix) is an acronym for strengthsweaknessesopportunities, and threats and is a structured method that evaluates those four elements of a project – like learning to drive. It is also useful to help you plan your own business and, if you’re involved in training ADIs, you may want to introduce this evaluation tool to them.

A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a company, product, place, industry, or person. It involves specifying the objectives and identifying all the elements that could affect the end goal – both external factors that you have no control over, and personal factors that you can control – which are favourable and unfavourable so that the end goal becomes a reality.

You could use SWOT to help someone to drive at the outset of their training and the learner (or trainee driving instructor) could take it home with them for you to discuss next lesson.

  • Strengths: characteristics of the person, who is learning to drive – or, training to become a driving instructor – that would give them the best chance of succeeding;
  • Weaknesses: characteristics of the person that place them at a disadvantage. People often compare themselves to others, who have been successful, and may think they do not have the same strengths. This comparison is, in itself, a weakness.
  • Opportunities: elements in the person’s life that will help keep them motivated towards success; and the resources they could use to build their success. For example, having access to private practice or even a simulator, online videos etc. and what doors will be opened once they have been successful.
  • Threats: elements in the person’s life that could cause trouble for the eventual success. Time, money, peer pressure etc.

Your role is to facilitate this process using skilful question techniques and listening carefully. If you want to enhance your skills, please do not hesitate to contact me, for a bespoke training session, geared to your needs. Use the contact form below for any questions you may have.
