Neil Wightman, one of many great trainers, I have had the pleasure of working alongside, over many years, shares his story on becoming an author.
The COVID-19 pandemic had an unprecedented impact on businesses worldwide, and driving schools were no exception. With restrictions and safety measures in place, driving instructors found it challenging to operate normally, leading to a significant reduction in revenue. As a result, many people involved in the industry were concerned about the future of their businesses and livelihoods.
During this challenging period, a driving instructor, in particular me , decided to take a different approach to the situation. Instead of staying idle and worrying about the future, I decided to embark on a new project that would keep me productive and engaged. I realised that taking on a new challenge would be beneficial for my mental well-being and provide me with a sense of purpose during uncertain times.
The project that I chose was to write a book focusing on the standards check, a topic of great importance to driving instructors and potential driving instructors (PDIs). Although there were already books available on this subject, I wanted to create something unique and more engaging. They envisioned a comprehensive manual complemented by instructional videos that would provide a multimedia learning experience for instructors and PDIs.
However, embarking on the book project was not an easy task. I had a clear vision of what I wanted to include, but determining where and how to begin was a formidable challenge. I had to conduct extensive research, gather information from various sources, and organize everything into a coherent structure. Additionally, I had to ensure that the content was easy to understand and engaging for the readers.
Despite the challenges, I persevered, and the result was a comprehensive manual that covered all aspects of the standards check. The manual was complemented by instructional videos that demonstrated the practical aspects of the standards check, making it easier for instructors and PDIs to understand the process.
The book project not only helped the instructor remain productive during a challenging period, but it also had an impact beyond My personal goals. The manual and videos I created have become valuable resources for driving instructors and PDIs, helping them prepare for the standards check and improve their teaching skills. The Summary from the risk management section
“ In this section we have covered the competencies that cover the risk management part of your job. It’s about the instructor constantly managing any risks in the surrounding area and the pupil’s actions.
We’ve Also covered the importance of sharing responsibility between instructor and the pupil, encouraging and gaining agreement from both parties allows for no misunderstandings.
The core competencies are the basis of faults and how through discussion, we gain and encourage self analysis so that learning can take with the pupil at the centre of a fault occurring and be able to remedy the action.
Understanding the levels of instruction allows you to use teaching effectively so that the right level can accompany the right learning style and create rapport and correct faults .
Using and understanding how we observe the pupil allows better outcomes as we can spot faults by observing body language as well as what the pupil is doing.”
My journey from driving instructor to published author is a fascinating tale of transformation and personal growth. Along the way, I have encountered numerous challenges and obstacles, but have persevered and emerged victorious. I have gained a wealth of knowledge and wisdom through my experiences, and have now distilled these insights into a powerful book that can help others on their own journeys.
