Why this book

Every instructor knows the learner who passes comfortably and then, a few months later, has a bump, a near miss or a scare. They could control the car. They could read the junction. What they had not yet learned was to judge themselves: their motives, their limits and the pressures that shape their choices.

That cannot be taught by telling. It has to be coached. Coaching for Driver Development draws on more than thirty years in UK driver training to show you how, in the car, on real lessons, with real learners.

What you will find inside

  • When to teach, coach or mentor, and why coaching works in driver training
  • Ethics, professionalism and the instructor–learner relationship
  • Behaviour change, risk and the Theory of Planned Behaviour
  • Setting the coaching goal, powerful questions and the levels of listening
  • Managing emotions, anxiety and test nerves
  • GROW and T-GROW for structuring lessons
  • Tools, techniques and activities you can use straight away
  • Reflection, self-evaluation and coaching for lifetime safety

Twenty chapters, each ending with reflection tasks so you can put it into practice on your next lesson.
